Punishment Island: The History of Women.

 

Akampene (Punishment) Island on Lake Bunyounyi is so named because in the past unmarried pregnant girls would be left there to die alone from starvation. If they were lucky, their lover, or perhaps a fisherman without the means to pay a dowry, might rescue them under the cover of night from a certain death .
